I am very proud of the guides from 1st Brussels in Belgium who raised over 100 Euros and created a fabulous photo exhibition showing the differences between lives in Belgium and Liberia. Well done!

Forum: What are you doing?

Our Project

Hello

We are 23rd Wigan Town St Maries Guides and we chose Book Aid Africa as our Changing the World project.

We held a Book Sale, besides books we sold t-shirts, African Jewellery (which we had made oursleves), African pictures and bookmarks, and we also had a reading tent where we read stories to younger children. We raised 47.10 with this sale.

We then completed a sponsored trail quiz around Yarrow Valley Country Park, ending with chips for supper. We had to run for shelter at the end as the heavens opened just as the chips arrived, but it didn't spoil our fun! We raised a further 58, making 105.10 in all.

Thank you

St Maries Guides and Guiders, Standish, Wigan, Lancs

Forum: Book Aid International

We failed with this one

One of my Guide patrols in the smaller of my two units chose this project and really struggled to get interested in it. Far too much like school and virtually impossible to do the games with a unit of only 10 girls!
They gave up and had more fun with a different project.

Forum: Asthma UK

We have decided to complete a range of small projects which we hope will add up to something special for Demelza House Hospice for Children.

So far, the girls have:

- Completed an evening of carol singing to raise funds

- Made a quilt which we hope to take to the hospice soon

- The squares have been knitted, yet to be sewn together into a second blanket

Ahead we also have a visit planned from one of the Demelza House team to talk to the girls, a fund raising coffee morning planned and a bob-a-job week at home with all the girls taking part.

In total we have 16 Rainbows and 24 Brownies who are enjoying getting involved.
Forum: What are you doing?

Book Aid International - 3rd Hazlemere Brownies

3rd Hazlemere Brownies held a "reading tent" inside their meeting hall.
We decided to hold a book swap and cafe to raise money for Book Aid International. The girls each brought in 3 books to swap and we provided cakes and drinks. We divided the hall in two by hanging down sheets, this helped to create a tent like feel to the two halves. In one half we scattered cushions over a rug providing a nice comfy area for the girls to take a look at their newly acquired books and in the other half of the hall we sold drinks and cakes.
The Brownies decorated the "tent" with the masks they had made and the posters explaining about Book Aid International. We also had some fairy lights to give our "tent" an extra special feel.
The Brownies had invited their friends, parents and grandparents to come along and join in the book swap.
A great time was had by all and we raised 73.94.

Forum: Book Aid International

Book Aid International

Book Aid International

After a late start this term our unit has been having great fun with this project. We have cooked and tasted Chapatis (a favourite with the girls), we have made our own wrapping paper, masks and bracelets to sell at our Reading Tent. We invited along two people, one who has visited Uganda many times and he brought in some amazing crafts to inspire us. The other visitor works as a physiotherapist in Cameroon and she came along with a computer to show us lots of great pictures of people she knows and has helped over there. She also taught us to sit on our heels like they do. We had a great session writing poems, learning plays and songs to perform at our Reading Tent. This Thursday we are holding our Reading Tent and will be decorating our hall with posters we made and selling refreshments, crafts, and having a book swop too. We are all looking forward to what will be the finale to a very busy but very enjoyable term.

Forum: What are you doing?

Woodland trust

For our Changing the World project, the Rainbows chose The Woodland Trust. We had a term of 'woodland' related activities, from making pine-cone people, to trying berry (and banana) smoothies. We also spent a day planting trees (all chosen by the girls) and going on a woodland trail. I will never get tired of the excitement shown by the girls for things we adults often take for granted (in this case a caterpillar on one of the trees they planted). Moments like this make a great project even better!

Forum: What are you doing?

Downloading photos and the consent form on the site

I may be mad.... but the form for consent for downloading photos seems to be addressed to the carer or parent of the children who are in the photos. I have up to date permission forms for the children to appear in photos to be used for publicity or in the press. However the form on the site is confusing for me. It is neither addressed to me nor to the parent actually since in order to be able to view the form the parent would need a login. This means I would have to ask the parent again for a completed form (downloaded and printed on paper) so that I could send it off to you so you may use my photos. I wonder that any guiders ever send off anything. Please can you advise urgently. The form seems to be in a format that it could be completed online.. am I wrong here?? How have others got their photos on the site???
Elaine

Forum: Help me!

WWF Driven By Patrols

The Girls took full control of the first part of the project really making it their own. We let each patrol take a section ie energy, food we eat & throw away and decide which elements they wanted to do. They really got their teeth into it with some fantastic presentations, games organized for the whole unit and generally good fun with lots of information and knowledge shared. The One planet challenge was an end of term BBQ with the local brownie section on the beach. The project has been both informative and fun and has really allowed the girls to put their own mark on it.

Forum: What are you doing?
